The Texas Association of Municipal Information Officers (TAMIO) was developed as a result of the increasingly complex role of public information in municipal government. When organized in 1974, only a handful of Texas cities employed professional communications staffs. Today, TAMIO has a growing number of public information and public relation specialists serving small communities as well as urban centers throughout the state.
This year’s Annual Conference will feature Pre Conference Sessions by Digital Accessibility by WeCo on Understanding Users with Disabilities and Digital Accessibility given by Lynn Wehrman Founder, President and CEO, Dane Dunham Principal Accessibility Specialist and Ellen DeCesare Director of Accessibility Services.

Hear how to build practical skills to create accessible digital experiences and prepare your agency for new federal digital accessibility rules. This workshop covers ADA requirements, real-world disability navigation, and best practices for websites, documents, and PDFs to ensure inclusive, compliant, and user-friendly content for all people.
The first session begins with an overview of digital accessibility and its real-world impact, including how people with disabilities interact with digital content. Participants will explore accessibility laws, standards, and measures, and gain a deeper understanding of different disabilities through guided discussion and a live demonstration of navigating digital platforms with a disability.
The second session focuses on website accessibility, including the difference between accessibility overlays and true structural accessibility. Attendees will learn how to build accessible navigation, create inclusive visuals such as images and charts, design accessible forms and interactive elements, and utilize tools that support accessibility efforts.
The third session covers accessible documents and PDFs. Participants will learn what makes a document inaccessible and how to create accessibility in native files using proper structure, hierarchy, alternative text, and color contrast. The session also includes practical tips for improving Excel-generated PDFs (such as agenda memos) and an introduction to proper tagging basics in Adobe PDFs.
