Demonstrate your organization’s efforts toward WCAG compliance and ADA digital accessibility with an Accessibility Statement for your website, software, or mobile app.
What Is an Accessibility Statement?
Accessibility policies (or statements) tell your website visitors, online customers, and app users the story of your accessibility efforts. This gives them confidence that they will be able to access and use your site or software and find the information they need. It is a step in legal risk management, recommended by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C).
Accessibility policies encourage good communication between you and the people you want to reach.
Where Should a Digital Accessibility Statement Live?
This depends upon your customers and users. However, most organizations create a page for their accessibility statement and include it in their navigation bar, footer, and site map. This makes it easier to locate.
3 Types of Digital Accessibility Templates
Templated Accessibility Statement: You’ll find many free digital accessibility statements on the web, including this example accessibility statement from WeCo. Keep in mind that accessibility templates are written to work for a wide range of organizations, and some of the elements may not fit your organization; likewise, there may be unique elements to your digital properties that the template omits. At a bare minimum, a templated digital accessibility statement works, but we recommend either the Simple Statement or In-Depth Statement, which uniquely represents your online properties.
Simple Statement: Demonstrate your present and future accessibility work. Simple Statements are constructed at no charge to clients who purchase any WeCo Manual Accessibility. We also offer complimentary annual Accessibility Statement tune-ups for each consecutive year you purchase a Manual Audit.
In-Depth Statement: This highly customized statement showcases your Manual Accessibility Audit and Usability Testing. It details the accessibility work you’ve done and the work you’re planning to do to comply with your chosen level of Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG). Custom pricing is available upon request. We include annual Accessibility Statement tune-ups with this.
